We love our vines

For centuries viticulturists have been adapting their techniques to the seasonal conditions that augment the grapes. These days’ Australian viticulturists are some of the best in the world, using world class techniques, combined with decades of pioneering, visionary work.

To achieve excellent viticulture and delicious, memorable wines Sidewood applies an extensive vine management program.

The vineyard management team work long, often unsocial hours, to ensure that the vines and fruit receive whatever they require, at any time, at any cost.

The team are certified to carry out all and any of the following activities.

  • Slashing
  • Herbicide and fungicide spraying (single or multi row)
  • Barrel pruning – A type of machine pruning that condenses the plant and enriches the fruit
  • Cane sweeping/mulching – mostly performed post harvest to assist the soil for future growth
  • Soil amelioration - A physical process in which soil is improved for agricultural use, such as by ploughing, draining, or fertilizing.
  • Grafting
  • Yield estimations
  • Soil moisture monitoring
  • Vineyard appraisals
  • Petiole sampling – taking samples of the petiole (leaf stem), checking the nutrient levels to ascertain the amount and type of fertilizer required
  • Bud dissection analysis
  • Spray program development
  • Irrigation scheduling
  • Fertiliser requirements
  • Virus testing
  • Bird netting and control measures
